Discover the best contemporary art in the Baltic region. Activities for families and children

The contemporary art exhibition “With Seven-League Boots. First Station – Denmark” at the Art Museum Riga Bourse opens Boris and Ināra Teterev’s arts programme TÊTE-À-TÊTE 2015. Until 25 October, you are welcome to view these works of art, as well as to take part in the education programme.

The educational programme complementing the exhibition contains a range of events giving the general public the chance to learn more about contemporary art. Philanthropist Boris Teterev believes that it is vital to stimulate the curiosity of the Latvian public about the contemporary art in all its diverse and colourful forms. Therefore, the education programme is of particular importance. It has been adapted to appeal to the interests of each and every visitor from kids to contemporary art experts.

In turn, attending the opening ceremony of the exhibition and TÊTE-À-TÊTE 2015, State President Raimonds Vējonis expressed his belief that this is a unique opportunity for art lovers to savour the magic of masterpieces, to learn more about the respective artists and to immerse themselves in contemporary art.

Educational events complementing the exhibition:

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, visitors will have access to a free family guide: “Art Researcher: Contemporary Art”. This has been created for kids who attend the exhibition accompanied by their parents. The guide contains various tasks and a thematic dictionary, providing them with an interesting and captivating introduction to the exhibition.

Interested parties can book guided tours with narration in Latvian or Russian.

19 September and 10 October at 13.00 - Family Day “Unusual Art”.

Parents and their children will have the chance to visit the exhibition accompanied by an educator from the museum, giving them the chance to discover examples of contemporary art and to take part in creative workshops where they will jointly be able to create works of art, experiment with paints, and use balloons instead of brushes, as well as to produce screen prints on the fabrics or clothing they’ve brought with them with the motif of Dmitri Gutov’s installation “Gondola”. 3 October at 16.00 - lecture “Greenland and Spitsbergen”.

Uldis Alksnis, Head of “Jacob’s Travels” will converse with a reprsentative of the Danish Cultural Institute in Latvia.  The Art Museum Riga Bourse’s travellers’ club “Terra incognita” awaits those who have travelled, are travelling or going to travel - notionally or in reality. 8 October at 17.00 - lecture “How to understand contemporary art in the context of traditions and experiments”. Lecturer: art historian Inga Šteimane.

The activity cycle “Space, Costume and Image” engages representatives of creative professions to encourage different generation to mutually collaborate and ensure the heritage of traditions. During the course of lectures, discussions and conversations conducted by art specialists, art historians and architects, participants will be introduced to historical styles and their manifestations in the fine arts, architecture and fashion. 11 October at 15.00 - a meeting with art historian Helēna Demakova. All interested members of the general public are welcome to attend. Prior reservations are not required.

In addition, during the course of the exhibition, kids can attend a creative workshop entitled “The Colour Workshop”. After studying the exhibition accompanied by an educator from the museum, workshop participants will have the chance to try their hand at creating works of art, drawing inspiration from what they’ve seen and learned in the exhibition.

Boris and Ināra Teterev’s arts programme TÊTE-À-TÊTE 2015 is taking place from 11 September to 30 October. Under its auspices, major new arts events are taking tracing the initial path to the nascent Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art and concurrently offering viewers a rich offering of impressive contemporary cultural events.

En route to the nascent Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art, the exhibition “With Seven-League Boots. First Station - Denmark” (at the Art Museum Riga Bourse) is the first exhibition in which, in collaboration with the Latvian National Museum of Art, the Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation is introducing the general public to the very best examples of the contemporary art collections of museums in the Baltic Sea region.
